Maersk Diversifies Green Energy Use to Mitigate Risks and Advance Decarbonization

Maersk Diversifies Green Energy Use to Mitigate Risks and Advance Decarbonization | IINO san's Logistics News

Maersk is exploring multiple new fuels as part of its efforts to decarbonize and diversify risks.

Let’s take a closer look at their strategy.

Maersk’s New Fuel Strategy

Maersk has been utilizing green methanol for its decarbonization efforts, but now, they are considering introducing new fuels like bio-LNG (liquefied biomethane) as well.

By not solely relying on methanol and incorporating bio-LNG, Maersk aims to spread its risks and ensure a more secure path toward decarbonization.

This decision was announced by Maersk’s CEO, Vincent Clerc, during the Q2 2023 earnings call (covering April to June).

The company also revealed plans to procure 800,000 TEU dual-fuel vessels by 2030.

These new vessels are expected to be gradually introduced between 2026 and 2030, replacing older ships with the latest dual-fuel compatible vessels.

Maersk’s Financial Performance

Now, let’s touch on Maersk’s financial situation. Although the company experienced a 61% revenue drop in Q2 2023 compared to the same period last year, it still managed to achieve a $470 million profit.

This positive turnaround comes after three consecutive quarters of losses since Q3 2023.

Additionally, Q3 2024 is expected to see further improvement in earnings.

One reason for this is the time lag between contract rates and spot rates, which is anticipated to correct itself in the third quarter, leading to better financial performance.

Moreover, the impact of the anticipated strikes on the U.S. East Coast is currently considered to be limited, suggesting that Maersk’s earnings could remain stable.

Summary

In summary, Maersk is making significant investments toward achieving zero emissions, including the consideration of new fuel options.

On the financial side, there are signs of improvement, with expectations for continued stable growth.

Maersk is steadily progressing as a leader in the shipping industry, aiming to balance decarbonization and profitability.

We will continue to keep an eye on their developments.
